I have always had a passion for animals and I am what you call a 'crazy cat lady'. Growing up, I would be found either outside playing in the mud with animals or nose-deep in a book or encyclopaedia about animals and the world. I would always be admiring my pet cats and imagining they were mini big cats from around the world. I could never sit still and people thought I was a bit weird.

It wasn't until I was 16 and took part in my first solo volunteering trip to South Africa that I fell in love with the continent and knew it was my home. It is in South Africa that I have always felt closest to nature, to the wild animals, and to the people.

However I was not naive in thinking that this beauty would last forever. As the years went on and I continued my adventures to South Africa, I became more and more aware of the ever growing threats facing Africa's wildlife in this developing world. I was never destined for a 'normal' life and knew that I wanted to dedicate my life to conserving the most incredible environments and the wildlife within them. I therefore moved to Wales, where I gained a first in International Wildlife Biology. During my degree, I had some incredible opportunities to travel back to Africa, to Borneo, and to Mexico to complete my dissertation on jaguars in the Mayan jungle.

Throughout this time, photography was never a serious interest, as I was too preoccupied in actually watching and studying the animals I was working with. However, I realised that not everyone shared the same view of the simple beauty in an animal or environment. I'm not great with words, so trying to get someone to understand my point of view was often difficult. It was then that I realised I could help to conserve species around the globe by showing other people what I see, through photographs.

I have now qualified as a Field Guide in South Africa and am currently working with a volunteer organisation who collect data and collaborate with research organisations and communities to aid conservation of wildlife in the area and across Africa. I now have an excellent opportunity to not only further my career within conservation, but to broaden my photography knowledge and portfolio, which I can ultimately use to educate others and play a part in the conservation of African wildlife.
